The Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage is right around the corner, and I can hardly wait!
The Smokies are only about an hour and a half away, so I decided to plan a quick road trip to scope out this year’s new hikes and also see if I could catch a sneak peek of the wildflower wonders that await.
So, I called my wildflower wingman (more like, wingwoman) to see if she’d like to join me, and it wasn’t long before we were off…

Wildflower National Park!
I’m happy to report that our little road trip didn’t disappoint--they don’t call it Wildflower National Park for nothin! Wowza!
I’ve created a little video clip to share just a few of the highlights below.
Of course, nothing quite compares to being there, but at least this will give you a sense of the spectacle. I only wish I could also share the scent of the wild phlox—oh my! I never even knew it was fragrant! Now, I’m completely smitten.
I’ve never seen or heard of Phlox perfume, but surely it exists?
I have to credit my pal, Carolyn, with this revelation. She had me get down on my hands and knees to get the ‘full effect’.
She said phlox was one of her favorite scents and that her mom would bring bouquets of these tiny purple flowers into the house every spring, and they would scent the entire house.
Speaking of Carolyn—I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to her.
Carolyn is a former park ranger and always has fantastic flower stories to share, but oddly enough, I never really knew what sparked her love of wildflowers in the first place, so I asked her about it while we were trekking along.
Ok, so now that you’ve met Carolyn, here’s your sneak peek at some of the wildflower wonders of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Enjoy!!
Now is a great time to become a Flora&Forage Insider! Paid subscribers will have access to exclusive, ‘behind the scenes’ pilgrimage content, including interviews, videos and wildflower merch!
